Receiving Therapy: Starting and Stopping Services

Getting Started with Therapy

Initial Evaluation:

Before services can begin, your child will undergo an initial evaluation to determine their specific needs. This evaluation helps create an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), which outlines the services your child will receive.

Developing the IFSP:

After the evaluation, you’ll meet with a team of professionals to develop the IFSP. This plan is tailored to your child’s unique needs and includes goals, the types of therapy recommended, and how often services will be provided.

Parent Coaching Model:

Babies Can't Wait operates on a parent coaching model, where therapists work closely with you to empower and equip you with the strategies and tools needed to support your child's development. This approach ensures that you can continue to facilitate your child's progress in everyday activities, even outside of therapy sessions.

Beginning Services:

Once the IFSP is in place, services will begin. Therapists will work with your child in settings that are comfortable and familiar, such as your home or a community center, to support their development. As a parent, you’ll be actively involved in each session, learning techniques to help your child reach their milestones.

Private (Off the IFSP) Therapy

What is Private Therapy?:

Private therapy refers to additional therapy services that are not covered by the IFSP. These services are arranged independently of the Babies Can't Wait program and may be pursued if you feel your child needs extra support or specific therapies not provided through the program.

Finding Private Therapists:

You can seek private therapy through referrals from your child's current therapists, recommendations from other parents, or by searching for licensed professionals in your area. Ensure that any private therapists you choose are qualified and experienced in working with children with similar needs.
Costs and Insurance: Private therapy typically involves out-of-pocket expenses or may be covered by health insurance, depending on your plan. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to understand coverage options and potential costs.

Coordination with IFSP Services:

While private therapy can complement IFSP services, it's important to coordinate with your child’s Babies Can't Wait service coordinator to ensure that all therapies are aligned and support the overall goals of the IFSP.

Adjusting or Stopping Services

Reviewing Progress:

Your child’s progress will be regularly reviewed, and the IFSP can be updated to reflect any changes in needs or goals. You are an essential part of this process and can request changes to the plan at any time.

When to Adjust Services:

If you feel that your child needs more or less support, or if their needs have changed, you can request a meeting to discuss adjustments. This might include increasing therapy sessions, adding new services, or transitioning to different types of support.

Stopping Services:

Services typically stop when your child reaches their third birthday, at which point a transition plan will be put in place. If you choose to stop services earlier or if your child no longer needs them, you can discuss this with your service coordinator to ensure a smooth transition.

Transition Planning:

As your child approaches the end of their time in the program, a transition plan will be created to help move them into appropriate preschool services or other community programs. This ensures continuity of care and support for your child’s ongoing development.

Your Role as a Parent

Active Participation:

Your involvement is crucial at every step—from starting services to deciding when to make changes or stop them. Your insights into your child’s progress and needs are valuable in shaping their therapy experience.

Open Communication:

Maintain open communication with your service coordinator and therapists. This will help ensure that the services your child receives are always aligned with their current needs.
